Pre-Occupational Therapy Major

At Cornerstone University, our pre-occupational therapy students prepare for a graduate degree program by gaining foundational knowledge and experience in their desired career path. By exploring health care through the lens of a Christ-centered worldview, students understand the connection between both practical knowledge and individualized care. As they go through the program, they are guided by professors who mentor them toward their God-given calling

Foundational Skills that Last A Lifetime

As a pre-occupational therapy student in the exercise science major, you will take six courses that act as prerequisites toward a graduate program in your field. While the prerequisites are designed to align with the admission requirements of occupational graduate programs in Michigan, you are free to hone your research on other topics of interest of your preferred graduate program.

Careers

Through the pre-occupational therapy program at Cornerstone University, you’ll gain a deepened understanding of how the body works and how exercise affects how the body moves. With this knowledge, you’ll gain practical career skills that will help you best serve your patients.

Internships

All traditional undergraduate students at Cornerstone take part in an internship or practicum experience that supplements their learning in the classroom. This gives you the opportunity to work in a physical therapist’s office, do field work in anatomy and physiology and more. Here are some of the places our students intern at.

Concentration Courses and
Learning Outcomes

The pre-occupational therapy program at Cornerstone is designed to inspire your intellect, deepen your character and prepare you to lead in your career with influence and wisdom. Other exercise science concentrations include cardiac rehabilitation and pre-physical therapy.

PSY-111 General Psychology

A basic introduction to psychology covering influential people, concepts, theories and methods. Topics include development, personality, perception, learning, biopsychology, psychological disorders and treatment.

PSY-235 Lifespan Development Psychology

This course examines major developmental issues from conception through the end of life, from a bio-psycho-social-spiritual framework. Students will explore and apply major human development theories including, but not limited to, behaviorism, psychoanalytic, social learning, cognitive theory, psychosocial theory and ecological theory. A variety of activities including lecture, discussion and case study application will be utilized in exploring the human lifespan.

PSY-353 Abnormal Psychology

This course examines the major categories of psychopathology, including anxiety disorders, affective disorders, schizophrenia, personality disorders and organic syndromes, with emphases placed on the symptoms and causes of the disorders and therapeutic methods used to treat them.

PSY-441 Physiological Psychology

An exploration of the complex interplay between physiological structures/processes and human behavior. Focus topics include the neurological basis of psychological disorders, motor function, language, memory, learning and emotion. Emphasis will be given to gaining a basic understanding of neurological disorders.

SOC-111 Introduction to Sociology

Introduction to the general field of sociology. This course includes an overview of several subfields of sociology. Basic theoretical perspectives of sociology are used to provide an explanation of basic institutions and social processes.

SCI-242 Medical Terminology

This course equips members of the health care professions with a working knowledge of medical vocabulary. Emphasis is placed on definitions, spelling and pronunciation as it relates to the body. The course is designed for students desiring to pursue health-related careers.
