Thanks to everyone who played along with the Google-Library Challenge this week, we had a lot of correct answers. This week’s winner is Dana Nixon, Assistant Registrar in Graduate Studies, who was the first to answer correctly. Below is her answer:
A PCA is not for everyone. Good coaching takes an extraordinary amount of time, and because a PCA involves developing more than physical skills, it may take more time than a traditional CCA. It takes time to develop decisionmaking skills, and it takes more time to develop good decision makers. While a PCA may be time-intensive initially, coaches and teachers may find that they and their players use practice time more efficiently and achieve higher levels of individual and team performance. Coaches who believe that developing their players' character should be an intentional part of their game plan will find that a PCA is well worth the time and effort.
First I went to Google Scholar and entered in the names of the authors. This gave m the title of the article -; “A Player-Centered Approach to Coaching.” Then I went to the CU Library website, then clicked on Favorite Databases, then First Search. I entered the title of the article into the Search For box and clicked on Article First. Then I got to the title and clicked on “Search for Full Text.” This opened up a CU page and I clicked on “Article” at the left, which corresponded with “Academic One File” at the right. This gave me the title, which I clicked on again, which gave me the full text!
Perfect! Google Scholar really is a great tool, indexing many (but not all) scholarly articles. The only drawback with this search tool through is access to complete articles. Dana, like many of you, discovered that through Miller Library’s subscription databases CU faculty, staff, and students have access to all these works. Congratulations Dana!
We have three more weeks remaining with this semester’s challenge, and three great prizes ready. We’ll be back next Tuesday, April 14th at 3:00 with another question.
