What to Know About Scholarships & Grants

Scholarships and grants are financial aid that generally does not have to be repaid, making them one of the best ways to reduce the cost of your education.

Scholarships are typically awarded based on academic achievement, leadership, talent or other qualifications.
Grants are generally awarded based on financial need.
Some awards are automatic. Depending on the program, you may be automatically considered when you apply for admission.
Others require an application. Some scholarships require additional materials or a separate application.
Complete the FAFSA each year. Filing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) ensures you’re considered for the widest range of federal, state and institutional financial aid opportunities. Cornerstone’s FAFSA code is 002266.

What's the difference between a scholarship and a grant?

Scholarships are typically awarded based on academic achievement, leadership, talent or other qualifications. Grants are generally awarded based on financial need. Both are forms of financial aid that generally do not have to be repaid.

Do I need to complete the FAFSA?

Completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) each academic year is the best way to be considered for many federal, state and institutional financial aid opportunities. It opens annually on October 1. While some scholarships don’t require the FAFSA, filing it ensures you’re considered for the widest range of available aid.

Are all scholarships application-based?

Can I receive more than one scholarship or grant?
