When is the last time someone asked you what you wanted to do with your life? If you’re anything like me or the several other students here at Cornerstone University, that question probably came roughly five minutes before your reading of this post and will swiftly come in the next five minutes as well. Or, at least that’s what it feels like.
Things were always SO MUCH EASIER when we were kids and we could simply change our answer every day from chef to astronaut. Now that we are all headed off to college (or at least considering it), the question becomes much more stressful. I am here to reassure you that if you do not know what you’re majoring in or what you’re going to do with your life,
IT IS OKAY!
Not only are you going to be okay, but Cornerstone has the tools to help you through the process in a way that will make you feel valued and validated. With the help of Cornerstone, and as a student that has been through the college experience, here are some ways to help you through this major decision.
1. START WITH THE BASICS
It’s easy to get overwhelmed when looking at the crazy number of majors that are offered today. In the midst of all the technicalities, nobody would blame you for feeling that way. Instead of plowing headfirst into the madness, I’m actually going to ask you to take a step back and ask yourself a few questions.
- What do you like to do, in the most general sense possible?
- What have you always been good at?
- What skills has God blessed you with?
Make sure you never forget, at any point from now on, that God created you for a purpose and He has already given you the skills to prepare you for those rules. The rest of life—yes, including college!—is honing those skills to be the light He means us all to be to someone else.
2. ASK “WHAT DO I WANT?”
There are going to be a lot of universities out there who want to get a read of you from a quick, basic conversation and they’re going to want to decide for you what is best for your life. Ultimately, you have the right and power to choose what is important to you. Make sure to ask yourself the important questions when choosing a major or university, such as what you feel is important for a university to provide for you. What activities do you hope to have or participate in at college?
Now, that is not to say that you shouldn’t ask for help in making these decisions, especially from people who have been in the exact same situation as you. For instance, the Center for Career and Life Calling at Cornerstone is filled with professionals that are here to help talk with you about what you believe your calling is. At the end of the day though, it is all about figuring out what is important to you.
3. TRY SOMETHING NEW
This is absolutely the most fun of all three steps. One of the awesome things about Cornerstone is that there a few required core classes that are necessary for every major, which means that for the first few semesters, you are free to fill extra space in core classes to take any 100-level course you’re interested in! Always liked to sing, but never tried to outside of your shower? Give a music class a shot! This step is an amazing way to let God have control of your future and show you something unexpected.
YOU ARE DOING JUST FINE!
God gave us every ability that we have to use for Him. This is the perfect time to figure out if God has given you a gift you don’t even know about yourself! You don’t need to know as soon as you come to college what you want to major in. Taking that first step is most important.
