Rev. Dr. Royce Evans Receives the James Murray Grier Theological Educator Award

News Nov. 7, 2018

Rev. Dr. Royce Evans, executive director of GRTS’s Urban Cohort program, received the seminary’s James Murray Grier Theological Educator Award at the 10th anniversary celebration of the Urban Cohort. This award was gifted to Rev. Dr. Evans for outstanding care and practice in his field and for his incredible work on the creation of the Urban Cohort, which has provided funding to send hundreds of urban leaders through seminary.

“Rev. Dr. Royce Evans was awarded the James Murray Grier Theological Educator Award for his tireless efforts to foster theological education for current and future ministry leaders,” Dr. John VerBerkmoes, executive vice president for academics and dean of GRTS, said. “While Dr. Evans fulfills multiple roles at GRTS, his focus is always toward the competency development of our students. His love for Jesus and commitment to the church drives him toward this end.”

Dr. Timothy Gombis, professor of New Testament, praised Evans for his distinctive leadership of the Urban Cohort program and his desire to bridge the gap between the church and the academy.

“The Urban Cohort program has had a profound shaping influence on the culture of GRTS so that the faculty and entire student body are blessed as a result,” Gombis said. “We give thanks to God for all of this, but from a human perspective, Dr. Evans is clearly the heart and soul of the program. He is the engine that drives it and the program’s success depends on his unique giftedness. He is a pastor, encourager, motivator, mentor, enforcer, agitator, teacher, shepherd, friend and faithful guide. He moves skillfully between the academy and the variety of churches in our wider communities and does so with grace. We have all been richly blessed as a result.”
