Discovery Institute Scholar Presents Intelligent Design Research at Cornerstone University

How do scientists investigate evidence of intelligent design in the natural world?
That question sparked a lively conversation at Cornerstone University on Friday, March 6, when Dr. Casey Luskin of the Discovery Institute visited campus to present “Introduction to Intelligent Design: Its History and Current Research” to students and faculty.
Hosted by the School of Health, Science & Technology, Luskin — associate director and senior fellow at the Discovery Institute’s Center for Science and Culture — walked the audience through the scientific ideas behind intelligent design. Drawing on examples from biology, he explained how researchers examine patterns in nature, particularly the complex, information-rich systems found in living organisms.
“Dr. Luskin’s visit was a real gift to our campus. He brought a rare combination of scientific expertise, clarity and intellectual rigor that served our students and faculty well,” said Dr. Nathan Lanning, dean of the School of Health, Science & Technology, associate vice president for institutional effectiveness, and professor of cellular and molecular biology at Cornerstone University.
Luskin also spoke about the growing body of research examining questions of design, information and biological complexity.
“Cornerstone is clearly positioning itself as a leading voice in the conversation about science and faith,” Luskin said. “I was encouraged by the university’s commitment to both intellectual integrity and faithfulness to Christian belief. The openness I saw from faculty and students to discuss intelligent design shows a genuine desire to seek truth — even when that pursuit can be difficult in today’s culture.”
Beyond the lecture, Luskin spent time with faculty discussing future research and collaborations with the Discovery Institute.
Lanning said Luskin’s visit encouraged students and faculty to think more deeply about what science can explain — and how scientists reason from evidence.
“We’re grateful for the thoughtful way he engaged our faculty and students and look forward to building a strong relationship with the Discovery Institute.”
Events like this point to what makes The Cornerstone Core™ curriculum distinctive: students study the natural world while recognizing the order and meaning within God’s creation.
