Cornerstone University Women's Basketball Team Claims WHAC Tournament Championship
On Tuesday, Feb. 27, the women’s basketball team won its tournament game against Indiana Tech to become the 2017-18 Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) Tournament Champion.
“Winning the WHAC Championship truly shows the girls what you can do when you set a goal,” Katie Mattera, head coach for women’s basketball, said. “There were many ups and downs through the season. We had to fully rely on the trust that we have in one another, the love we have for one another and the commitment we made to one another.”
Not having earned the WHAC title since 2009, the team displayed a cohesive effort and resilient attitude to achieve this record milestone.
“From the very beginning of the season, I knew this was a very special team, and we set high goals for ourselves,” Cassidy Vredevoogd, a senior forward for the CU women’s basketball team and leading scorer for the game, said. “Winning this championship exceeded all our goals and expectations and is an unexpected dream that just came true. It just goes to show how incredible our team chemistry is both on and off the court and how hard everyone has worked this season.”
The team now anticipates its first NAIA DII National Tournament game against Southeastern University (Fla.) in Sioux City, Iowa. The game is scheduled for Wednesday, March 7.
“Looking forward, we know our identity is in Christ alone, and we only play for Him,” Mattera said. “This has been a special season, and we are thankful to God for all the memories we have made as a team.”
