Wisdom Conversations Marks 10th Event with Timely Discussion on Communism, Freedom and the Future of America
More Americans and especially younger generations are questioning whether today’s economic and social challenges require fundamentally different solutions. As debates over socialism, communism, free markets and the role of government gain intensity, Cornerstone University invites the West Michigan community to join a regionally significant conversation as the country continues reflecting on America’s 250th anniversary.
On Thursday, October 1, the university’s signature Wisdom Conversations series returns for its 10th community gathering with Why Not Communism? A Wisdom Conversation on Freedom, Faith, and the Future of America.
Cornerstone believes these questions deserve thoughtful examination rooted in history, lived experience and a Biblically grounded Christian worldview. Rather than offering political talking points, the conversation will offer history’s record on:
- Why communism and socialism continue to appeal to new generations.
- What the Christian tradition teaches about freedom, work, property and human dignity.
- How free societies can confront injustice without sacrificing liberty.
- How parents, pastors, educators and citizens can prepare the next generation to engage these ideas with wisdom and conviction.
Moderated by Dr. Gerson Moreno-Riaño, president of Cornerstone University, the panel features Xi Van Fleet, author of “Mao’s America” and survivor of China’s Cultural Revolution; Yeonmi Park, North Korean defector, human rights advocate and bestselling author; Seth Dillon, CEO of The Babylon Bee and a leading voice on faith, culture and free speech; and Dr. Gary Saul Morson, professor at Northwestern University and one of the world’s foremost scholars of Russian literature and the history and modern impact of communism. Together, they bring the combined perspectives of those who have experienced communism firsthand, studied it through decades of respected scholarship, and witnessed its growing influence on today’s culture.
This year’s event marks the 10th Wisdom Conversations, continuing Cornerstone University’s commitment to being a place where important conversations that offer Christ-first insights happen. By bringing nationally recognized scholars, authors and cultural leaders to campus, the series equips students and the broader community to better understand the issues shaping our world and thoughtfully consider solutions through the lens of Christ-centered wisdom.
