Dr. Gerson Moreno-Riaño
Cornerstone University has a rich history of educating students to influence the world for Jesus Christ. I am honored and privileged to build upon the outstanding Christ-centered, student-focused and academically excellent foundation driven by the board of trustees, Dr. Joseph Stowell, and Cornerstone’s rich 80-year history of building lives that matter.
Cornerstone UniversityA New Leader,
A New Vision
Meet Cornerstone's 12th President
Dr. Gerson Moreno-Riaño knew that God was calling him to lifelong ministry at a young age—and committed himself to go wherever God called him. This journey for Dr. Moreno-Riaño began with teaching at Cedarville University before bringing him and his family to Regent University where he has served in various leadership roles for 14 years. Dr. Moreno-Riaño comes prepared to courageously lead Cornerstone and build off our strong foundation.
What matters most to Dr. Moreno-Riaño is helping students see the beauty of who Jesus Christ is. By building on this solid foundation, students will find Christ’s preeminence in all things, and their lives and futures will glorify God. That, Moreno-Riaño says, is why Christian higher education matters and why God has called him into what he calls “Christ’s vineyard” for spiritual growth and transformation.
Dr. Moreno-Riaño has an extensive background in teaching, specifically government and political science. He is the author of six books and has given numerous interviews and presentations both nationally and globally. Born in Colombia, South America, Dr. Moreno-Riaño moved to the United States with his family at the age of 9. He is husband to Ellen and father to six beautiful children.
A Qualified Leader
For decades, Dr. Moreno-Riaño has been a champion for Christian higher education. After teaching at Cedarville University and joining the academic leadership at Regent, Dr. Moreno-Riaño has witnessed the importance of a college education that is based in biblical truth. He aspires to bring that passion with him into his work at Cornerstone. The Cornerstone board of trustees saw this passion and selected him as president based on his uncompromising faith, academic track record and dedicated leadership.
When his family moved from Colombia to New York, Dr. Moreno-Riaño’s mother encouraged him to find a church near their home in Rochester. After finding a small Baptist church, Dr. Moreno-Riaño recommitted his life to Christ and felt called to lifelong ministry. Since then, he has taken an uncompromising approach to Christian higher education, viewing it as a necessity in today’s changing world. As other institutions become increasingly secular, Dr. Moreno-Riaño is committed to cultivating discerning minds and hearts that love the Lord.
Passionate for Academics
Dr. Moreno-Riaño enters his role at Cornerstone with over 20 years of higher education experience, including teaching in the classroom and overseeing staff and faculty in a leadership role. He has secured three degrees in political science and has a passion for political philosophy, government structures and how Christian citizens can influence both. He is also the author of six published books, the topics of which range from medieval history to internet democracy.
Before becoming president of Cornerstone, Dr. Moreno-Riaño served in multiple leadership roles at Regent University, including department chair and dean of the College of Arts & Sciences. He concluded his outstanding career at Regent as executive vice president for academic affairs & chief academic officer, an appointment he held for seven years and which was distinguished by record-breaking growth in academic programs, student enrollment, academic quality and overall revenues without compromising Regent’s Christ-centered mission. This experience has given Dr. Moreno-Riaño the indispensable leadership skills he will use to guide Cornerstone into its future.
