Lead and Influence Athletes with a Coaching Minor

Coaching is a position of influence that impacts performance, character and well-being. The Coaching Minor at Cornerstone University prepares you to lead athletes with knowledge and responsibility through coursework in human performance, injury prevention, nutrition and applied coaching. Grounded in a Christian worldview, this minor equips you to care for the whole athlete — physically, mentally and spiritually — while modeling integrity and servant leadership on and off the field.

Develop Market-Ready Skills with a Minor in Coaching

Through science-based coursework and hands-on coaching experience, you’ll build practical skills that strengthen your résumé and leadership readiness, including:

Coaching Fundamentals – Apply effective coaching strategies to plan practices, teach skills and support athlete development.

Human Performance Knowledge – Understand how the body moves and responds to training through anatomy, kinesiology and exercise physiology.

Injury Prevention & Safety – Promote athlete health by recognizing injury risks and applying basic first aid and prevention practices.

Nutrition & Performance Awareness – Support athlete energy, recovery and performance through foundational nutrition principles.

Leadership & Communication – Lead athletes and teams with clear instruction, motivation and responsible decision-making.

Coaching Minor

KIN-231: Principles of Coaching

Discover the roles and responsibilities of coaching by exploring coaching philosophy, athlete development, communication, motivation, team cohesion and effective teaching techniques.

BIO-242: Anatomy & Physiology II

Explore the structure and function of major body systems with emphasis on disease, dysfunction, and practical health applications. Lab work includes microscopic and animal investigations. Highlights the body’s homeostasis and its analogy to the Body of Christ.

BIO-347: Introduction to Nutrition

Examine how food impacts health, development and physical performance. Study energy pathways, the six essential nutrients, body composition, and weight control to support optimal health and performance.

KIN-341: Anatomical Kinesiology

Learn the musculoskeletal system, qualitative analysis of human movement, and biomechanical principles applicable to exercise and sport.

KIN-342: Exercise Physiology

Investigate the physiological responses of the healthy human body to exercise, including energy systems, nutrition, conditioning, testing, and exercise prescriptions in a lecture and lab setting.

KIN-362: First Aid, Injury Prevention, Treatment

Teaches injury prevention, evaluation, and rehabilitation methods, with practical experience in care techniques. Students earn American Red Cross certifications in First Aid, CPR, AED, Bloodborne Pathogen Training, and Concussion Training.

KIN-370: Practicum in Coaching

Gain hands-on coaching experience by applying coaching principles, leadership skills and athlete-care practices in real-world athletic settings.

Students enrolled in the Coaching minor must complete their lab science core requirement with BIO-241 ANATOMY & PHYSIOLOGY I.
