Cornerstone Graduate New Principal Mike Perez: A Leader Who Elevates Education and Students

News September 19, 2024

In a world where early aspirations often shape educational leaders, Mike Perez’s path stands out as a powerful reminder of resilience, purpose, and transformation. Perez, the newly appointed principal of Wyoming Junior High School, is a shining example of what it means to lead with heart, vision, and a commitment to students.

Cornerstone University congratulates Principal Perez, a 2015 graduate from the School of Education & Human Services, on his new important role recently featured in the School News Network in Wyoming in the article, The “MVP” in the Principal’s Office.

The feature reflects a path that can inspire students that anything is possible. Born in Los Angeles and raised in Dallas, Perez’s journey was not the typical story of a straight-A student with dreams of attending college. He graduated from an alternative high school after falling behind and had never seriously considered higher education. It wasn’t until he met his future wife, Kristy, while waiting tables that the seed of pursuing a degree was planted. With her encouragement, he enrolled in college in his early twenties and, by age 29, earned a degree in education. But his story didn’t end there.

Perez went on to earn his master’s in educational leadership from Cornerstone University. “I reflected on moments in my own youth that could have been better,” Perez shared in the feature story. “I thought, maybe I could be that somebody that could make things better.” This desire to improve education from within led him to serve in various roles across schools in Grand Rapids, including principal at Burton Elementary, assistant principal at Westwood Middle School, and assistant principal at The Potter’s House, a Christian PK-12 that serves a kaleidoscope of cultures.

Perez’s journey to becoming an educational leader is a testament to the power of perseverance, faith and a commitment to lifelong learning. His life experiences, coupled with the knowledge and Christ-centered leadership skills gained at Cornerstone University, make him a force for good in the educational landscape — proof that with the right mindset and a strong foundation, anyone can rise to make a difference.

Cornerstone University is proud to count Principle Perez among its graduates, knowing that his impact will continue to inspire students and fellow educators alike.
