Ideas Have Consequences: Eric Metaxas on Communism, Freedom and Faithfulness

News October 2, 2026

Eric Metaxas

“Just because somebody believes in something doesn’t mean that it’s true.”

That was Cornerstone University Distinguished President’s Fellow Eric Metaxas’ challenge to students during Community Chapel as he urged them to practice discernment about ideas competing for their attention — particularly communism, socialism and America’s history. Beliefs do not remain abstract, he argued. “Ideas have consequences.”

Metaxas, a bestselling author and host of the nationally syndicated Eric Metaxas Show, spoke as a precursor to Cornerstone’s October 1 Why Not Communism? A Wisdom Conversation on Freedom, Faith and the Future of America, where he provided opening remarks. More than 1,000 community guests and students registered for the event, requiring a waiting list and pointing to significant community interest in the questions the evening explored.

When Ideas Become Reality

Metaxas’ mother grew up in what became East Germany, where relatives lived behind the Iron Curtain, and his father remembered communists attempting to take over Greece following World War II.

Those experiences informed his challenge to young Americans who have never lived under communism. He urged students to listen to those who have — including Wisdom Conversations panelists and communist regime survivors Xi Van Fleet and Yeonmi Park — and to examine an ideology by more than the promises made in its name.

“If you create a government that says there is no God, that’s going to have consequences,” he said, “and that is what the story of communism is.”

The consequence he emphasized was human suffering. And rejecting God also rejects the foundation for recognizing every human being as sacred and possessing inherent worth.

“If you’re a human being, you are created in God’s image,” he said. “He created you in His image, which is the most sacred, beautiful thing imaginable.”

Why America’s Founding Ideas Matter

That understanding of God and humanity became the bridge to Metaxas’ discussion of the United States.

“Every person in America must know this story,” he told students of the American founding. “This is not extra credit.”

Metaxas recently researched and wrote about the American Revolution and said he was struck by how deeply Biblical ideas influenced the men and women who founded the nation. He contrasted the American Revolution with revolutions that promised to give power to the people but ultimately concentrated power in government.

A critical difference was the founders’ understanding of where human rights come from. If every person is created in God’s image, human worth is inherent. Government does not give people their fundamental rights; those rights come from God.

Metaxas also submits that rejecting an earthly sovereign did not mean rejecting authority itself. The founders understood themselves as accountable to God, and political self-government therefore required people capable of governing themselves.

Freedom came with responsibility.

What You Believe Changes How You Live

Metaxas brought that principle directly back to students.

“Be a man or a woman of your word,” he said.

Keep promises. Pay what you owe. Honor marriage vows. Metaxas cautioned Christians against emphasizing God’s grace and love while forgetting that God is also holy and loves justice and righteousness. What Christians believe about God should have consequences for how they live.

He celebrated Cornerstone’s 2026-27 Theme of the Year, “Jesus Is Coming Again!”

“The idea that Jesus is coming back is great news,” Metaxas said. “It means there will be a reckoning. It means that all the suffering will be redeemed. It means that evil will be judged.”

His message ended where it began: beliefs have consequences, and faithfulness matters.

“God is a man of His word,” Metaxas said. “Be men and women of your word and praise the LORD in all things.”
