CU Theatre Presents "You Can't Take It With You"

News March 14, 2018

With its upcoming production of “You Can’t Take It With You,” Cornerstone University Theatre plans to showcase the talent of the entire CU community including current students and alumni.

“You Can’t Take It With You” is a madcap, idealistic comedy that reinforces the idea that you can only live life to the fullest by doing what makes you happy. The plot follows an eccentric family, the Sycamores, who have all sorts of crazy hobbies. Their tendency for disaster provides an immense amount of laughs and a heart-warming family message.

Investment of Alumni

Twice a year, Cornerstone University Theatre produces full-scale plays and musicals, including comedies, dramas, classics and modern works. Individuals who star in the productions come from all academic disciplines and backgrounds. The casts are not limited to Cornerstone students. All members of the Cornerstone community are invited to participate including alumni, faculty, staff and those from the Grand Rapids area.

The spring 2018 production features numerous Cornerstone alumni. From staging to marketing, Caroline Cahoon (B.A. ’03), theatre adviser for CU Theatre, coordinated the extensive preparations for this production. Steven “Buddy” Haskill (B.A. ’05) used his talents to direct the shows. On stage, recent graduates Audrey Wierenga (B.A. ’17), Josiah Duff (B.A. ’17), Ian Grell (B.A. ’13) and Mark Stoll (B.A. ’12) acted in the cast and alumni Rachel Turner (B.A. ’10), Aaron Turner (B.M. ’10), Kristen (Benson) Roberts (B.A. ’95) and Holly Newcomer (B.A. ’08) provided production support through stage management, set construction and prop coordination roles.

“CU Theatre wouldn’t exist without the help of alumni,” Wierenga said. “They continually show up for every production—people like Randy Burghart and Buddy Haskill who have directed shows and actors like Mark Stoll and Ian Grell who have come back to join the community in recent years. I have loved getting to know fellow alumni in theatre, and that’s helped me reach out to the larger theatre community.”
