Cornerstone Engineering Program Earns Prestigious ABET Accreditation

News September 9, 2025

Cornerstone University is honored to announce that its Bachelor of Science in Engineering (BSE) has earned accreditation from the Engineering Accreditation Commission (EAC) of ABET, widely recognized as the gold standard in quality assurance in engineering education.

This milestone confirms that our engineering program meets the profession’s highest global standards and adheres to industry-recognized criteria. It gives employers confidence in our graduates’ knowledge, skills, and integrity while expanding opportunities for professional placement in industries where ABET is the trusted mark of excellence.

“ABET accreditation underscores the industry excellence of Cornerstone’s engineering program. This important quality benchmark expands and strengthens the opportunities available to both our students and alumni,” said Dr. Gerson Moreno-Riaño, president of Cornerstone University. “Congratulations to our faculty, staff, and students, whose hard work and commitment made this achievement possible.”

The BSE program includes multiple concentrations — mechanical engineering, data science, design & innovation, environmental engineering, and engineering management — reflecting the breadth of Cornerstone’s curriculum to prepare graduates for diverse and evolving career paths.

“Our engineering faculty brings not only extensive field experience but also a deep investment in their students. They mentor, challenge, and support our future engineers, integrating a Christian worldview that shapes both their technical preparation and their character to serve and lead,” said Dr. Nathan Lanning, dean of the School of Health, Science & Technology.

Helping lead the accreditation process, Professor Michael Greene, associate professor of engineering and director of computer science, engineering & mathematics, contributed expertise shaped by both industry and military service. He holds a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Auburn University, a master’s from the Naval Postgraduate School, and previously served aboard the USS Nebraska and USS Wyoming as well as at U.S. Central Command.

“ABET accreditation is a significant milestone because it validates the quality of what our students are learning every day,” Greene said. “In engineering, preparation and a moral foundation are critical for solving complex challenges, and that is exactly the kind of training our students receive at Cornerstone.”

Engineering demand is rising nationwide. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects 8.6% growth through 2033. Fields like engineering with a data science focus (34% growth) and mechanical engineering (11% growth) are expanding even faster, reinforcing the relevance of a Cornerstone engineering degree. Our program has received the highest possible ABET accreditation action, securing full recognition for six years.

This achievement reflects the Cornerstone Advantage™: rigorous academic preparation and industry expertise joined with moral formation and leadership development. Thank you to our engineering faculty and staff, along with the assessment and advising teams, facilities and lab personnel, the Registrar’s Office, and university leadership, whose dedication made this milestone possible.
